AVA Meeting at Regensburg Animal Visual Ecology Symposium at ECVP 09 Salzstadel, Regensburg, Germany Invited Lectures Organisers Innes Cuthill (University of Bristol) Summary From optics to active vision, animals demonstrate a wealth of diversity in adaptations to the environment, behavioural niches, and the constraints of body size and mobility. Comparing animals that have separate evolutionary histories has long been a rich source of insight into the design and function of visual systems. This symposium is about vision in all animals: how they interact with environment and solve problems in their daily lives. Past AVA Animal Vision meetings show that interaction between animal vision scientists and those who study humans and machines is enjoyable and productive: leading to insights into optical, behavioural, and neural solutions to visual problems. The Symposium will interest researchers on animal vision, and those human vision researchers who study properties of natural scenes, action driven by such scenes, and visual ecology more generally. The venue is a beautifully-restored former salt warehouse, built in 1620 and located on the banks of the Danube in the historic Old Town of Regensburg.
Boat Cruise
There will be a 4 hr boat cruise on the "MS Regensburg" on the evening of Friday 28 August. Tickets will cost 25 Euros each incuding the cruise, traditional Bavarian dinner, and dancing. The boat will depart from, and return to, the quayside close to the meeting venue. A limited number of tickets will be available. To reserve, please email stating how many tickets you wish to reserve. Payment will be required at the ECVP or AVA registration desks.
Travel bursaries to attend an AVA meeting The AVA has a travel bursary scheme, which provides funding to help postgraduates to attend AVA meetings. The maximum award to any one individual is 100 UK pounds (150 UK pounds for meetings in mainland Europe). This can be used towards meeting registration, travel and accommodation costs. A number of bursaries will be made available for each AVA conference, and applications should be received by the Secretariat by the abstract submission deadline. The closing date for bursaries to attend the AVA Animal Visual Ecology meeting in Regensburg is 29 May 2009. We expect applicants to seek the most cost-effective means of attending the meeting. Accommodation will be funded only if essential to full participation in the meeting. You cannot claim the cost of AVA membership as part of this award, although you can still join the AVA via the registration plus membership “special offer” when registering for the meeting. You are expected to apply only for your anticipated costs, and to provide full details of these anticipated costs within your application. Applicants must be PhD students at a university in Europe, or must not have started their first post-doc job. All applicants must also submit an abstract for presentation at the meeting in question. To apply for an award, you need to complete an application form and send it to the Secretariat as an e-mail attachment, along with your abstract. Note that you will also need to submit the abstract separately to the meeting organiser for peer review. In addition, you must ask your supervisor to complete the supervisor form and e-mail it direct to the Secretariat. The e-mail address for applications, and to request the forms, is: gillian.porter@bristol.ac.uk. You may also download the forms from the links above. The decision on bursary allocation will be made by the meeting organisers. All claims must be fully supported by receipts. Payment will be sent by cheque within two weeks of receipt of the claim. Registration Fee Costs of registration: Please note that membership is for life. How to pay: When you use Paypal for the first time it takes a little time to set things up, but thereafter it is quite quick. We do hope you will find this a convenient way of paying your registration fee. If you pay by PayPal, registration of the cardholder will occur automatically. If paying for someone other than the cardholder please inform Gillian Porter by email. If you are also interested in attending ECVP, please register on the ECVP website. This website also contains advice on how to get to Regensburg and how to arrange accommodation. Registering on site in Euros or Pounds
